BIKER LIFESTYLE NETWORK

So, while out hitting all the local bike stores & HD dealerships today, a salesman knighted me as a 'rider' after I told him I rode a 6500 mile solo road trip in 08. My question to you is, what's the diff between rider and biker? Is there a diff?

Wow. Good question, however, I bet it'll set off some serious debate. I go with being a "biker". Of course that fits into my "theme" around here tho. "bikerlifestylenetwork", "biker-lifestyle", "bikerlifestyledating". So, I am biased. There are other reasons why I prefer biker, however, they are more personal preference than anything. When someone says "biker" I envision a different person than if the term "rider" is used. Looking forward to seeing the comments your question generates.
For what it's worth, I would say a biker is someone who mainly uses his bike for daily use. IE goes shopping, to work, doctor visits, etc. A rider on the other hand is the occasional rider. Just my 2 cents.

I agree there

When I hear the term "Biker" I picture someone you would expect to see in a David Mann painting. You know, the dirty, long hair, long beard, black shirt, blue jeans wearing dude that lives life by his own code and rides an american made V-Twin. Probably works in a steel mill somewhere and doesn't really care what people think of him.

On the weekends you might find him in the local pub drinking a beer and either playing billiards or darts. His bike is his only transportation and he doesn't keep it in a garage, he parks it right in his living room where he can work on it and insure that no one messes with it! He has many friends in the same walk of life that will stop by and hang out at his place, or at the pub but its not necessarily a club! Its the lifestyle - a way of living.

When I hear the term "Rider", I see this person riding just about any kind of bike that exists. They don't care about living up to someone else's idea of what it means to own and ride. They get out and ride either a track, the twistys or the coast. Its not about the image so much as it is about perfecting riding technique.

This person doesn't subscribe to the bullshit that if you don't ride a certain bike then you're not riding a real bike! Its more about being on two wheels in the wind enjoying life and the ride. This person would also have lots of riding friends who get out on the weekends and take long intense rides and then stop to have a burger or something to that effect. This person might also have multiple bikes. Thats because with different bikes there comes different riding styles and techniques. Remember, its all about experiencing riding... could be on a dirt bike, quad, sport bike, cruiser or scooter even!

So in many ways these two character are very very different, but in many ways they are also the same.

I agree with the brunt of your post, but I however have to disagree with you when it comes to your filing of scooter riders.  I don't believe that scooter riders should be lumped into the catagory of rider or biker.

Just my 2 cents

It's what is in your heart. Few words, ain't saying much but there it is. Says it all right there.
Yeah, there's a BIG difference.  A "rider" is a lawyer/yuppie type who scoffs "Bikers" during the week, while putzing around with his BMW buddies, then when he's feeling a little rebellious, jumps on his spotless Harley and rides around for a couple of hours with his chin in the air.  You can spot "riders" a mile away, they're the ones with creases in their leathers!

This is just a pet peeve of mine. I am a small woman who rides an old softtail. I have spent many years in the saddle, done a lot of miles (not as many as Chessie) and honed my safe driving skills. I know many other women who are damn good at riding - better than a lot of male riders I've encountered. It just irks me to no end when I and these ladies are judged as insignificant by supposed bikers, rubs, etc. I know there's a difference between the two categories. I know which one I fall under as well. Having to prove it to some guy every time I ride gets old.

Be safe in your travels my friends!

Rider: pretty high dollar bike that a mechanic has tuched mor than tha owner... nice clean leathers.. rides when the weathers nice and safe and time permits. Thinks about motorcycles once in awile or when its braggin time around tha water cooler ..     BIKER: "your engine block actually has stains from the blood of your knuckels ... Leathers look like you slept in them ..every day for a year, and smell like you used axel greese as waterproofing.."wich works awsum by tha way "... Rather ride through a hurricane than not ride at all !...Thinks about bikes ..when your not thinkin about sex..!!!        Or the combo of tha two!!!    Just my opinion...

big difference. Rider I envision as when the mood strikes or the weather is at its best, which we know doesn't happen all the time.  I know several some day's, not right now, I don't feel like it, its to chilly or windy, it looks like rain, some day I will buy a bike, etc.  We all know them.

pretty sad when the HD salesmen can't even get it right. I know lots of ladies who are bikers.

There is a woman that will ride with me when no one else will.  Rain, hail, wind, day, night, 20 degrees or 110 degrees, long ride or short ride, she'll go.  I respect her far more than the men who will only ride under perfect conditions, and she can ride circles around them any day.  That's why we're all here...it's a state of mind and a lifestyle, not a hobby.
